Graduation Stole Designs

Ever so often, we receive emails asking for tips and suggestions on how to design a graduation stole (which is identical to a graduation sash in case you were wondering). While there is no set rule on what to put, which side to place Greek letters on, spacing, or anything else, through our years of experience, we have come to see many creative and amazing graduation stoles designed by our customers.

With that said, here are a few basic tips we’d recommend considering when ordering your graduation stoles this year.

1. Focus The Colors – Have meaning in the colors you choose. Are they school colors, fraternity colors, sorority colors? Don’t just go with any color, but really think through your options. At YourSash, we offer 3 color options starting with your sash fabric, to the trim, to the actual embroidery, all of which can be customized.

2. Fonts – Keep it consistent. Think of your sash as a resume you’re sending off to your potential employer. Most likely you’ll want to have 1 common font set. This way, everything just flows better on both the left side and right side, and from top to bottom.

3. Make sure you have the basics - The most popular embroidery customizations you’ll see on a graduation stole are often “Class of 2013″ (or the graduating year), and the name of the organization (often times Greek letters, or abbreviations also). Focus on these, placing these 2 customizations on opposite sides of the sash, and from there building additional customizations (if desired) around those.

4. Order early! We can’t stress this enough, but order early. As soon as you know how many seniors are graduating, we’d recommend finalizing the designs and getting an order through. Our standard production times are 2-3 weeks + shipping, so order early to avoid rush fees.

Curious as to how others are designing their sashes? See a few designs and color combos below!

Graduation Stoles Class of 2013

It’s about that time of year again. No, time to fill out your bracket for March Madness (well, it is that), but graduations season!

Be sure to order early this year. We currently have a promotion where if you order 6 or more sashes (of any design), you’ll receive 10% off your entire order.

So what are you waiting for? Here are 5 tips to make the process of ordering graduation stoles easier and less stressful for you and your organization.

1) You’ll want to order at least 4 weeks before you need your sashes. So that means you’ll want to finalize your design and final order quantity before then. Set a date and reminder on your calendar to order early and save on rush fees.  Allow an extra week for certain seniors to get back to you.

2) Start counting now. How many seniors will need stoles? Setup a quick Facebook poll on your organization’s page to get a rough estimate, and ask people to confirm by a certain date.

3) Think of designs. What basics would you like on your stoles? Class of 2013, Organization name? Do you want additional personalizations? What is in your budget?

4) Place your order! Why delay any longer? Once you have the final order count and customizations, start designing your graduation stoles.

5. Sit back and relax and let us take care of the rest!  From production, to shipping, we’ll handle it all once we receive your order.

The Valedictorian Title… No More At Certain Schools?

In a recent article on AZCentral.com, the article mentions certain school districts taking away the Valedictorian title and no longer honoring it.

One of the main reasons being:
“Many students now take classes online, or transfer from other districts or states, he said, making it increasingly difficult to decide how to weight grades to determine a fair class rank.”

While the article does make many good points about the valedictorian status, and instead honoring the top 1 %, 2% or 10% of class, it seems to be a touchy subject for many parents (who commented on the article).

One of the top voted comments reads:
“Not honoring the top student is a nutty idea that was probably thought of by the parents of students near the top of the class.”

What are your thoughts on the situation? Do you feel the top student should be honored or just the top percentage of graduating students?

Also, if you’re graduating in June, it’s not too late to order your graduation stoles. Order soon and save on shipping costs.

Bike Theft at college Campuses

Bike theft is a big problem on college campuses. I remember for myself during undergrad, I was lucky enough to not get my bike stolen. My friends were not as lucky though. Even though we had identical u-locks and stored them in similar places, often times theives would get to these bikes, and before you know it you’re 2 or 3 bikes deep before graduation comes around because theives have stole your bikes.

So what’s the work around for all of this?
Wonder How To has a really interesting tutorial that shows you how to create a tilt sensor. How does it work? Well when your bike is moved at all, the sensor ends up going off.

Enough of a deterant to stop theives? You tell us!

Apple’s iPad Event, Graduation & Textbooks for the Digital Classroom

We’re excited, are you excited? Apple has confirmed the March 2nd iPad event where it’s very likely they’ll be unveiling a new iPad. It’s interesting to think back just two years ago how tablet PCs were not widely adopted, but now you can play just about any Angry Birds game… urr, we mean read books, access textbooks, and learn on a tablet.  This isn’t where the utility of iPads end for students though, think of the vast possibilities with Rush, Recruitment events, running more interactive meetings, keeping members more informed of events, and the other possibilities!

If you’re interested in reading about how tablet pcs are influencing the classroom, here’s a recent article from Reuters about text books and the digital classroom.  Maybe for the Class of 2020 graduates, there won’t be any textbooks, just digital textbooks?

And on a side note, we’re still running our 10% off sale on graduation stoles.  Don’t delay, order soon and avoid rush fees and as well!

What’s Graduation Mean To You?

What does graduation mean to you or what does it mean to your parents or the people who put you through school?

To us, graduation signifies a time to celebrate your accomplishments. Graduation day and your commencement ceremony is often on par with your wedding day and the birth of your first child. It’s not only when good things come to an end, but when a new chapter in your life begins.

Regardless of the path you take after graduation, if you’ll be traveling, going straight to grad school or entering the work force, we wish you the best.
Congratulations to the Class of 2010. And while we do hope you consider us when ordering graduation stoles, even if you choose another vendor, may all your dreams come to fruition!

And we’d like to leave you with a few of our favorite inspirational graduation quotes:

“Graduation is only a concept. In real life every day you graduate. Graduation is a process that goes on until the last day of your life. If you can grasp that, you’ll make a difference.” – Arie Pencovici

“Do not go where the path may lead; go instead where there is no path and leave a trail” – Ralph Waldo Emerson

“Desire and hope will push us on toward the future” – Michel de Montaigne

“If you can find a path with no obstacles, it probably doesn’t lead anywhere.” – Frank A. Clark

“All that stands between the graduate and the top of the ladder is the ladder.” – Unknown

Happy Holidays from YourSash Staff!

We hope everyone is enjoying the holiday season and/or your winter break!  While it’s a little slow around this time of the year for us, we’ve taken the time and opportunity to do some background work and gear up for a busy January and 2009 graduation season by adding new fabric choices, cuts, and embroidery options on all graduation stoles and sashes.  We’re also restructuring some of our workflow to add increased quality control and to lower turn around times.  We look forward to being a premier online vendor of custom graduation stoles and offering one of the fastest turnaround times.

We were recently forwarded an article from the Los Angeles Times about Student Loans and the unfortunate story of a student who is currently battling a $140,000 loan with an 18% interest rate.  Please take a read and forward it to your friends.  The more students who are aware of the dangers of private loans, the better.  In this down economy, it’s even more important to educate students about the dangers of student loans to avoid post-graduation life in extreme debt.

We hope you have a safe New Years Eve.  If you choose to party, please party safe and do not drink and drive.  Here’s to an even more prosperious 2009.

From our family to yours,
- YourSash.com Staff
