Graduation Stole Designs

Ever so often, we receive emails asking for tips and suggestions on how to design a graduation stole (which is identical to a graduation sash in case you were wondering). While there is no set rule on what to put, which side to place Greek letters on, spacing, or anything else, through our years of experience, we have come to see many creative and amazing graduation stoles designed by our customers.

With that said, here are a few basic tips we’d recommend considering when ordering your graduation stoles this year.

1. Focus The Colors – Have meaning in the colors you choose. Are they school colors, fraternity colors, sorority colors? Don’t just go with any color, but really think through your options. At YourSash, we offer 3 color options starting with your sash fabric, to the trim, to the actual embroidery, all of which can be customized.

2. Fonts – Keep it consistent. Think of your sash as a resume you’re sending off to your potential employer. Most likely you’ll want to have 1 common font set. This way, everything just flows better on both the left side and right side, and from top to bottom.

3. Make sure you have the basics - The most popular embroidery customizations you’ll see on a graduation stole are often “Class of 2013″ (or the graduating year), and the name of the organization (often times Greek letters, or abbreviations also). Focus on these, placing these 2 customizations on opposite sides of the sash, and from there building additional customizations (if desired) around those.

4. Order early! We can’t stress this enough, but order early. As soon as you know how many seniors are graduating, we’d recommend finalizing the designs and getting an order through. Our standard production times are 2-3 weeks + shipping, so order early to avoid rush fees.

How Distracting is Facebook?

It’s no question that Facebook can be distracting and detrimental to your studies. While back in the day, video games were the main way students procrastinated with studies, now the Internet provides additional mediums of entertainment.  Everything from YouTube, to Netflix, Hulu, mobile Apps, Instagram, Pinterest, blogs, and much more.

According to a new study that involved 300 middle school, high school and college students, most of their distractions came from technology, often in the form of notifications.

What exactly does that mean?

To cite the study, “First, these students were only able to focus and stay on task for an average of three minutes at a time and nearly all of their distractions came from technology.”  three whole minutes!

“Not surprisingly those who stayed on task longer and had study strategies were better students. The worst students were those who consumed more media each day and had a preference for working on several tasks at the same time and switching back and forth between them.”

You can read about the full study here:

So what’s that mean?  Maybe around finals time it wouldn’t hurt to disable facebook or install internet blocking applications that disable access to entertainment oriented web sites..

Good luck on finals and we hope to see you at graduation! Also if you’re graduating in May and have not already ordered your graduation sashes, order soon to save on shipping!

Organizing Your Google Docs for Studying & Group Projects

We just had to share a quick tip with you today. If you’re like most college students, you probably use Google Documents to facilitate your group projects.

Today Google announced that they’re now making it even easier to organize your files in Google Docs. That means if you’re organizing research for your paper, or collecting order information for your graduation sashes or other design options, keeping them nice and tidy just got much easier.

Check out the full post here for more information about this update: http://googlesystem.blogspot.com/2012/04/its-easier-to-organize-files-in-google.html

Manipulative Friends & Graduation Time

This post may be one of the more dark posts that we feature on our blog, but we felt it was very important. In a recent article on LifeHacker, the article goes into talking about emotional warfare and essentially how to root out the manipulative people in your life.

It’s no doubt that in college, we’re introduced to people from all walks of life. While we won’t get along with everyone, by the time graduation comes around we generally have a solid group of friends who we want to spend time with. The tough thing with any group though is that you rarely also get along with every person.

I remember when I was in undergrad and an active in my fraternity. All of the bros were great, but at the time time, I got along with certain ones more than others. Certain people will often be “downers” or pessimists, and hanging out with these people wasn’t all too fun. So how does this matter with graduating seniors? It matters in many ways actually. With commencement comes opportunities to start anew. As you move away from college and out on your own, or back home, it allows you to make important decisions of who you want to hang out with on a consistent basis, and who you don’t care to hang out with as much. Your influences and support network of friends will play an important role in your career growth as you go through ups-and-downs. And while it’s natural for even the best of friends to sometimes grow apart, sometimes pre-emptively cutting ties with those going in different directions may be an option you’d like to pursue.

New Lavender Graduation Stoles

Last year, we unofficially offered lavender as one of our colors for graduation stoles.  While not listed on the web site, we had a lot of email requests from customers for the color.  This year, we’ve decided to make it official and list it on the web site!

So now, yes.  Lavender graduation stoles and sashes are available through our online ordering system.  The color applies to embroidery as well!
