What Do College Students Wear At Graduation?
The dress code for many colleges across the nation varies. While most will require graduates to wear a standard black graduation gown, some utilize different color gowns (i.e. for PhD Candidates, faculty, administration and key note speakers) or to emphasize school pride and colors. Other graduation apparel includes a traditional cap and tassel (adorned with the year of the graduating class), cords and sashes. A graduation sash is meant to be worn above the graduation gown during commencement ceremonies.
What is the Purpose of a Graduation Sash?
A sash may hold many purposes. Some sashes signify membership in an organization such as a fraternity, sorority, honors society, or other Greek organization. Other graduation sashes may be worn to signify Ethnic heritage (such as Kente , Filipino & Vietnamese Graduation Sashes.) Additional meanings and purposes of sashes include, but are not limited to: changes in status (from Active member of a Greek house to an Alumni), Family Traditions, Cultural heritage, Honors Societies, and accomplishment.
Why Do Students Wear Graduation Sashes?
Like above, the reason why students wear graduation sashes varies. To some, it is a respected tradition in the organization in which they are a member or signifies accomplishment and a goal they have reached. Others wear it to show that they are proud of their cultural roots and where they have come from.
Can I Wear More Than 1 Graduation Sash?
Actually it is fairly common for graduates to wear multiple graduation sashes. Some graduates often wear a standard school sash, a sash from their fraternity or sorority, and a sash from their ethnic organization or honors society. Often times those graduates are swapped with balloons and stuffed animals from family and relatives too and end of sleeping the remainder of the day from carrying everything around and all the photos!
