Your Post-Graduation Trip & Planning Ahead

In today’s post, we review a recent post from gigaom about how to plan a vacation. While the topic itself may be easy for many, it becomes more difficult for those of us who work in web based environments.

First, in the past years, the proliferation of the smartPhone has led to an increased expectation of people to always be connected. Clients may expect you to answer emails sooner, or your boss may start wondering if you’re working if you haven’t replied in a few hours. The issue presented is even bigger than this when it comes to work. It’s easy to procrastinate a personal email without a deadline, but obviously when work calls… it’ll be harder to take that 3 week hike in the Mountains, than otherwise.

In addition, the author brings up a good point about the “remote guilt” – a guilt felt by people who work remotely to not feel paranoid about being perceived lazy and in turn they end up working more hours to compensate. If you’re use to working remotely, this may quickly and easily transfer into your vacation traveling.

And finally, it comes down to planning early. Planning early will be the best bet. If you have a job lined up for after graduation, make sure they know you’ll be traveling before your start date. This way you don’t miss any important emails or come off as lazy or unresponsive before you even start! Planning ahead will not only help you save money, but help you have a much more enjoyable vacation in the long run!

How To Beat Procrastination

Today’s post covers the interesting topic of procrastination. Most adults today have to-do lists that seem to run on and on. So how do you stop procrastinating and get things done?

In an article from PsychologyToday, the author talks about how she finally scheduled a dentist appointment after putting it off forever. After doing so, she felt great and was independent from this obligation. That feeling of procrastination was draining, of not being able to cross a task off of your list.

Now think of it this way… if you know you have a certain obligation you have to take care of, *cough* ordering graduation stoles, then why not order now? Often times the sooner you take care of something, the easier your schedule will be, thus allowing you to manage your other responsibilities.

Another point brought up was that when completing that task, it freed up her time to take on other responsiblities. In contrast to your to do list before an “errand day” vs after, it’s easy to feel less stressed when there’s less things that you have to take care of that will allow you to just rest.

While we know there are many more health benefits of not procrastinating known to man, these were only just a few.

Attn: Students – Rollercoaster Day 2011!

Yes Rollercoaster Day 2011 is coming up next week! What is it you ask? Check out FreddieW’s YouTube video.

We’re calling out all students and especially the graduating seniors of 2011 to attend this year. Go with your friends before everyone graduates and is working, traveling or separated!

There’s no reason you shouldn’t… well unless you have a midterm or test that day that determines whether or not you graduate, then you probably shouldn’t go… but for the 90% who don’t have anything super urgent that day, go!

What Are You Doing Post Graduation?

What are your plans after you graduate from college? Are you going to travel, go the corporate route, or start your own thing? Well, if it’s the latter, a blog you’ll want to check out and start following is the QuickSprout Blog, written by Neil Patel.

Neil’s a serial entrepreneur and his blog I feel really does speak to today’s generation of entrepreneurs as well as students. It’s about going after a great idea and executing on it.

So without further ado, here’s a link to 10 lessons learned from a not so fast company.

Giving Back To Your Local Community

Yes, graduation is almost here but there’s still so many opportunities to really get involved and make a different in your community! Below we’ve highlighted a few that might peak your interest.  Give them a try if you have some time!

  • Donate Clothes Or Unneeded Goods – Do you really need that extra futon or dining room table? If you’re not a big fan of lugging it back home, consider donating it to the local non-profits. Alternatively you can always craigslist it and then donate the proceeds!
  • Donate Your Time – Grab some friends and go help out locally. Whether it’s at a senior house, a trash clean-up, at a soup kitchen, or anything else… there’s so many opportunities to get involved.
  • Donate Some Mula! – Yep cash! Imagine if you could get each member of your house to donate just $5. That amount would go a long way for many local charities.
  • Setup An Annual Charity Event – The beauty with Greek organizations is the highly motivated and tight knit group of individuals involved in them. At my fraternity, the alumni had setup 2 major events. One was a haunted house that we put on every Halloween for the children in Isla Vista. And the other was a Spring Carnival filled with Jolly Jumpers, free food, music, carnival games, and more. During my years as an active, myself and other bros setup an annual poker tournament. Now 8 years later the tournament is still a tradition with the proceeds donated to various charities.
